Traffic Exchange Perfection

Traffic Exchange Perfection

Making a success of traffic exchange (TE) advertising requires that you obtain the attention and interest of the TE surfer without irritating them or taking up too much of their time. There are four steps to creating the perfect TE advertising campaign.

Step One: Attention
Your webpage appears before a TE surfer and, before you can ask them to take any action, you need to get their attention without giving rise to annoyance. An intriguing headline or picture can be very powerful, without requiring the need to poke the visitor in the ribs with corny clip-art animation, music or sound effects.
A simple splash page like this one

(more on this subject in a future article) is all that’s needed to get the surfer’s attention.

Step Two: Interest
A TE user can get into a zone while surfing that makes it easy to tune out. This is especially easy to do when so many other users are promoting cookie-cutter pages and tiresome biz-ops. Fortunately, you will never resort to such amateurish and wasteful promotion strategies and your high quality splash page will stick out like a sheep standing on its hind-legs.

Now that you have the surfer’s attention, you need to arouse their interest and persuade the visitor to perform the simplest of all Web browsing functions: Clicking the mouse button. If you accomplish that, a new page is going to open in a new browser window that contains your real offer.

The purpose of presenting the offer in a new browser window is two-fold. Firstly, it prevents the user from being distracted by the countdown timer reaching zero and reminding them that they can surf on when they’re ready. Secondly, assuming you include text on the page to reassure them, it allows the surfer to take action on your offer without the concern that doing so might accidentally log them out of their surfing session.

Step Three: Desire
In many ways, the hard part is over. You’ve successfully persuaded the visitor to briefly interrupt their surfing pattern and view your offer in a new browser window. The next part of the process is to create sufficient desire in the mind of the visitor so that they feel compelled to keep reading your offer.
There have been entire marketing books written on the subjects of influence and persuasion, but we’re just going to concentrate on two basic hooks:

1.Arousing curiosity to discover the answer to a question or the unveiling of a secret.
2.A free gift of significant value.

The hook may, of course, represent a combination of the two but the intended result is the same – to create a high level of interest and desire AND keep the attention bubbling long enough to allow you to hit…

Step Four: Action
There are an infinite number of variations to configure Steps 1-3 but, when it comes to this TE strategy, Step 4 is always the same: to ask the visitor to divulge, at a minimum, their email address so that they can receive the promised information or gift. It’s a low risk proposition, made all the more secure by the promise on the page that their information will be held securely and that they can unsubscribe at any time.

Once the person has handed over their email address, the job is complete and you can quickly allow your lead to get back to work. Once you have permission, you are free to contact this person at a time when they aren’t busy surfing and when they have time to consider a more in-depth offer.

These four steps are the backbone of the TE strategy. Re-read them a couple more times and be sure that you have these points clearly in mind. Everything else that we do from this point will be built on this foundation.

As Robert points out, the old AIDA principle that sales people have used for over a century applies in traffic exchanges, too. I have been following Robert for four years, and he often has helpful observations.

    The ACA’s of advertising-
    -Grab Attention
    -Create Curiosity
    -Suggest Action
Your explanation helps reinforce the basics.
Many people try to over complicate an ad page. It is important to remember your Ad Page is just a message enticing the surfer to take action and investigate your program further.

Traffic exchanges do work, but many people fail when using them because they don’t have quality information like you have shared.
